TRAC Immigration – Comprehensive, independent, and nonpartisan information about immigration enforcement

Posted by Cynthia Barnes on July 3, 2006

TRAC’s Immigration Web site now contains detailed performance information about most of the the 200-plus immigration judges in the United States. Included are year-by-year percentages of asylum matters denied by each judge, comparisons in denial rates with other judges in the same immigration court as well as with all judges in the U.S., and information about the nationality of the asylum applications on which that judge ruled.
Also included are biographical sketches for all judges — provided to TRAC by the Immigration Court and never before published in one place — covering such matters as college and law school attended and principal places of employment before becoming a judge. Start at http://trac.syr.edu/immigration/reports/judgereports and select a judge either by name or by the city in which the judge delivered the greatest number of his or her asylum decisions.

100 Years of U.S. Consumer Spending: Data for the Nation, New York City, and Boston

Posted by Cynthia Barnes on June 29, 2006

This report, 100 Years of U.S. Consumer Spending: Data for the Nation, New York City, and Boston, BLS Report 991, offers a new approach to the use of Consumer Expenditure Survey data. Normally, the survey presents an indepth look at American households at a specific point in time, the reference period being a calendar year. Here, the authors, Michael L. Dolfman and Denis M. McSweeney, use consumer expenditure data longitudinally and draw on information from decennial census reports to present a 100-year history of significant changes in consumer spending, economic status, and family demographics in the country as a whole, as well as in New York City and Boston.

Census of 1851 (Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia)

Posted by Cynthia Barnes on May 19, 2006

This tool allows researchers to search by geographic location only. As this is not a nominally-indexed database, it is not searchable by family name. The digital images within this database are copies of the original microfilm records held by Library and Archives Canada. 1851 Census images for New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are presented with the support of the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management [www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm]. The information on these images can be used to prepare family histories, the history of towns and villages, research immigration trends and a great deal more.
